Sales Associate/Merchandise Handler

Department: Operations
Location: Urbandale, IA

Purpose:

Participates in the efficient and profitable day-to-day operations of The Giving Tree thrift store, by greeting and assisting customers and maintaining store orderliness, cleanliness and merchandise displays.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensures a satisfied experience for guests at the store by providing quality customer service.
  • Processes sales transactions ensuring accuracy of payment. Operates cash register program according to policy and instruction.
  • Welcomes customers at the donation drop off area, sorts donated items and prices them according to established pricing guidelines.
  • Arranges donation pick-ups and picks up donated merchandise when needed using the company vehicle provided.
  • Understands and complies with store security procedures at the open and close of business. Adheres to standards as instructed by the manager or executive officer.
  • Assists with building displays and other store presentation.
  • Assists with marketing, promotions and special events.
  • Fosters a positive team environment with staff and volunteers.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in a retail and/or thrift store environment preferred
  • Ability to be self-motivated, work independently and multi-task
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations
  • Available to work store hours Monday through Saturday 9:00 am to 7:00 pm and work special events as needed
  • Comfortable in driving store truck for donation pick-ups
  • Must have valid driver's license, auto liability insurance and reliable transportation if driving is required
  • Successful completion of pre-employment physical, drug screen, 2-step TB test and background check

Working Conditions:

  • Physical requirements: Medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Physical activities: Climbing, Kneeling, Reaching, Pushing, Talking, Hearing, Repetitive motions, Standing, Pulling, Stooping, Walking, Lifting, Fingering (picking, pinching, typing, etc.), Grasping (applying pressure with fingers and palm), Feeling (perceiving size, shape, texture, temperature by touching)
  • Environment: Work is primarily performed in a climate controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential
  • Time: Work hours based on patient-driven census model; Ability to work a flexible schedule and potential extended hours
  • Travel: May be required between locations
